Our Mission Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Big Bend Habitat for Humanity, based in Tallahassee, Florida, is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian organization that is part of the global Habitat for Humanity network. Since our inception, we have been dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness in the Big Bend area and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. We strongly believe in the conviction that everyone deserves a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. As a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, we work in Leon, Gadsden, and Wakulla counties, focusing on addressing the needs of our local communities. We adhere to the principle of "partnership housing" where those in need of adequate shelter work side-by-side with volunteers to build decent, affordable houses. These houses are then sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used to build more houses. Our ReStore in Tallahassee operates as a non-profit home improvement store and donation center. We sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials to the public at a fraction of the retail price. All of the profits generated from our ReStore are used to build homes, community, and hope right here in the Big Bend area. Through volunteer labor, efficient management, and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, we have been able to construct new homes and renovate existing ones for hundreds of families in need in our local community. In addition to building homes, we offer homebuyer education and financial literacy training to ensure our partner families have the tools and knowledge needed to succeed as homeowners. We invite individuals, corporations, faith groups, and others to join us as we continue to build and renovate houses, strengthening our community and transforming lives through the provision of affordable housing.
